NDP MP Romeo Saganash (Abitibi-Baie-James-Nunavik-Eeyou, Que.) introduced a Private Members' Bill entitled, An Act to ensure that the laws of Canada are consistent with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Bill C-469 was read a first time.

January 28 – A request for an emergency debate was denied

NDP Aboriginal affairs critic Jean Crowder (Nanaimo-Cowichan, B.C.) made a request for an emergency debate regarding the federal government’s relationship with First Nations. Speaker of the House of Commons Andrew Scheer (Regina-Qu'Appelle, Sask.) denied the request.
