Prime Minister Mark Carney (Nepean, Ont.) decision to hold three federal by-elections on Aug. 31 is a cynical choice that puts Liberal political interests ahead of democratic participation, says the Green Party of Canada. Canadians should be asking why Mark Carney decided the last Monday of August was the right moment to ask people to choose who represents them in Parliament,” said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. “Our democracy works best when governments make it as easy as possible for people to participate. Choosing a date when families are travelling, students are preparing to return to school and many Canadians are squeezing in the final days of summer vacation does the opposite. It suppresses participation, and that is what makes this choice undemocratic. Governments have a responsibility to make it as easy as possible for people to choose their representatives.” Contact media@greenparty.ca.
