New Democratic Party of Canada

NDP MPs Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona, Alta.) and Gord Johns (Courtenay-Alberni, B.C.) are warning that Prime Minister Mark Carney’s (Nepean, Ont.) refusal to enforce the Canada Health Act is opening the door to a two-tier health-care system in Canada. The MPs stated that organizations that have long advocated for private, market-based U.S.-style health care have praised Carney’s “openness” to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s efforts to expand private delivery in the province. They called on Ottawa to uphold the Canada Health Act and ensure access to care is based on need rather than income. “The Prime Minister cannot simply stand by while it is dismantled province by province,” said Johns.
