Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Prairies Economic Development Eleanor Olszewski (Edmonton Centre, Alta.) provided a July update on the 2026 wildfire season, reporting 796 active wildfires nationwide, including 60 out-of-control fires receiving full response, with 3,137 fires and 1.4 million hectares burned so far this year. Olszewski also announced $1.25 million for six projects aimed at strengthening wildfire preparedness and response capacity, including initiatives involving Métis and First Nations communities. “With the summer in full swing we are seeing increased wildfire danger across the country,” stated Olszewski.
